Medical equipment for the  mother groups
Support of the social commitment of  the 'aama samuha'

Back to overview:

The villages of the Hindu-Buddhist-society in Nepal are subdivided into smaller neighbourhood districts, the so called 'toles' with abbot 150 to 200 families. The people of a tole have a special feeling of solidarity. Sometimes they have their own and unique religious-cultural rites, gods, temples and shrines. The women of a tole merge to so called mother groups, the 'ama samuas'. These groups feel the obligation caring for the poorest in their tole, in special the old and  single women. Sometimes they are collecting small money to support the complete destitute women. In case of illness they feel obliged to care for the needy and they also care for medical surveillance and monitoring where ever possible. The 'ama samuas' are perceiving and important social function which in western countries normally belong to the responsibilities of governmental or religious organizations.
End of 2014 Nepalhilfe received a generous donation in form of 35 professional stethoscopes. Initially it was planned, to give these devices to hospitals or doctors of the region.

After my arrival in Kirtipur in March 2015 I was quickly disabused that the stethoscopes would find a better usage with the 'ama samuas'. They would like using the stethoscopes for controlling the blood pressure of their protégés. However, for this purpose then the corresponding blood pressure manometers were still missing.

I decided spontaneously to unceremoniously buy this missing devices in Kathmandu.

All 28 'ama samuas' in Kirtipur have been equipped with stethoscope plus  sphygmomanometer in 2015. The women have taken the devices in reception in two special events in the convention hall of Kirtipur Hillside Hotel. Immediately after they were trained in correct usage by some kind honourable experts of the local district chapter of the Nepal Red Cross Society. Now the women are hoping to be enabled in future to recognize life-threatening situations with their protégés much earlier and thus be able to call for a medical doctor in time.
