Help for disadvantaged women and seniors:
Concerted social commitment of my helpers in Kirtipur

In Nepal's patriarchal society, the main burden of supporting the family falls on the backs of women, who are not only the keepers of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, but also seek to improve the household budget through a variety of secondary activities. With hard work on looms, in construction and in agriculture, they supplement the income for the family, in which the father is often without regular employment.

A terrible consequence of this material hardship is child labor, which can be found everywhere.
Single women and single mothers are particularly disadvantaged - single due to the death of their husband, divorce or other separation. Traditionally, the social position of these women in male-dominated Nepal is already very weak.

Lalita

Rajman

The couple Lalita and Rajman Maharjan, two of my helpers in Nepalhilfe Kirtipur, have been selflessly committed to improving the quality of life of their fellow citizens for years. They were the initiators of the establishment of 'our' bakery, which created permanent jobs for disadvantaged women in the Thambahal neighborhood (Tole) in 2007/2008. This bakery soon became a well-known Kirtipur restaurant for typical Newarian food. At the end of 2014, 55 women and men were already employed there in modest jobs.
The couple's social commitment seems inexhaustible.

Har Devi

In spring 2012 they decided to start an initiative to combat the unemployment of disadvantaged Newar women. With the help of Nepalhilfe Kirtipur, they are establishing workshops for traditional Newarian crafts for around 35 women's jobs. In 2015, Lalita Maharjan suggested making it possible for single women to create a livelihood by providing microcredit. 15 women took advantage of the offer and used the loan to open tea rooms, general stores, vegetable shops and even a rice beer brewery. However, one of the women, Har Dewi Maharjan, did not use the loan for herself. She was involved on a voluntary basis in looking after the Senior Citizen Group, an association of needy seniors in Panga, and, with our consent, used the loan to improve the living situation of the old people.

On the initiative of Vijaya Kumar Maharjan along with Lalita and Nanda Maharjan, we started our Women Empowering program in March 2022. A professional tailor's workshop with jobs for up to 30 particularly disadvantaged women from the entire Kirtipur Municipality was created.
Thanks to Lalita's high level of commitment to the acquisition and marketing of tailoring products, the tailoring shop will be a great success in 2024.

Under the leadership of Nanda Kumari Maharjan, in 2023 we developed a concept for supporting up to 70 elderly citizens of Kirtipur who are particularly in need of help. The “CARE FOR SENIORS” project with contributions to nutrition, hygiene measures and the provision of basic emergency medical care was started in January 2024 and is to be continued every year.
The previous volunteer supervisor of the "Senior Citizen Group", Ms. Har Devi Maharjan, will trustfully manage our funding supported by Nanda Kumari.
