A bakery for the women of Thambahal tole
Classic example of successful help for self help

The construction of the bakery building

Back to overview:

As a "building site" for the bakery the Kirtipur Municipality office in accordance with the Thambahal neighbourhood-cooperative offered to the women the roof-top of  a communal building of the tole which was lying fallow due to financial shortness.  On top of this half-finished building without doors and interior plastering was to construct  an other floor.
F
or the construction of that additional

floor the experts of Kirtipur Municipality office had drafted a detailed cost estimation which then was used as the basis for our financial support. The nine months lasting construction works for the brick-building with glazed wooden windows were started mid of March 2007 by erecting the concrete but-

tresses. The shell works ended with the construction of the flat concrete roof already by end of April 2007.

After that one had to accept considerable delays due to a very early beginning of the  monsoon season causing difficulties for the the drying process. Because of unusual severity of the monsoon with  heavy rainfalls the roughcasting of the interior could only be finished by end of October, shortly before Dewali (the light and New Year festival of the Newar). The bakery floor of the communal building is divided into two rooms: a small one for the preparation of the yeast dough and for the entire bakery oven and a large one where the main work is done and which also contains the storage for the bakery products. This latter room can  also be used furthermore for the big Newari-feasts of the neighbourhood.

To a large extend the bakery has been build as help for self-help by the inhabitants of Thambahal themselves using untrained labourers necessarily supported by some qualified skilled craftsmen. The flow of the construction works have been organized by the women themselves. Finally on November 22, 2007 the women moved with some delay into "their" bakery. The additional delay was caused by the men of Thambahal who took the technical and financial chance of the open construction site to  realise an other second floor on top of the bakery floor. However we payed attention that our donations were not used for these additional activities.

The communal building has now three floors in total. The basement is furthermore serving as a communal room for gatherings and festivities. It is also used for trainings of the local music bands. The first floor accommodates the bakery and the additional floor, erected by the men accommodates parts of the restaurant "Newa Lahana", commonly operated by the cooperative Thambahal.
